More than hundred years ago, the hospital "Krankenhaus Sachsenhausen" was founded by Carl von Noorden as the first diabetic centre in Europe. Nowadays the Diabetic and Endocrinology unit is still one of the main focus of our modern and efficient general hospital.
The Department of Surgery (58 beds) covers all standard surgical procedures. Most abdominal operations are performed using minimally invasive techniques. A main field of the department is the surgical treatment of obesity. Specialized interests include the implantation of cardiac pacemakers, surgical endoscopy and proctology as well as the treatment of diabetic foot-syndrome. Trauma surgery includes the management of extremity trauma and fractures in the elderly, especially hip implantation and kyphoplastie.
The Department of Diabetology (40 beds) offers the most advanced comprehensive therapy available for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and for the complications associated with diabetes. The patients get a specific training to handle their disease by a team of specialists and diabetes advisers. Pregnant diabetic patients are cared for in cooperation with the Obstetrics staff. The Department is certified by the German Society of Diabetes (Deutsche Diabetesgesellschaft DDG).
The Department of Internal Medicine (70 beds) is specialised in the diagnosis and therapy of heart diseases, gastroenterology and pneumonology. One main focus is the catheter-based treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes in cooperation with a cardiologic medical office. We operate a sleep laboratory which is accredited by the German Society of Sleep Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Schlafmedizin, DGSM).
Caring for the special needs of women is the focus of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at the Krankenhaus Sachsenhausen(43 beds). We are specialized in minimally invasive surgery—procedures that use small incisions and are associated with less pain and a quicker recovery than traditional surgery. Expectant parents will find comprehensive prenatal care at Krankenhaus Sachsenhausen. We offer childbirth preparation classes. We strive to create a birth environment of warmth, comfort, assurance and encouragement.
The Department of Anesthesia provides care to the patient throughout his or her surgical experience. This includes medical evaluation prior to surgery, consulting with the surgical team, providing pain control and support of life functions during surgery, supervising care immediately following surgery, and medically discharging the patient from the recovery unit.
Krankenhaus Sachsenhausen cooperates with a radiologist performing conventional radiology, sonography, computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
